Standover, reach and saddle height do different jobs, and only one of them is printed on the size label. Here is what to measure and check before the test ride.

A size label on a bicycle is a rough sorting mechanism, not a measurement. Two bikes marked medium, from two brands, in the same shop, on the same afternoon, can differ by an inch of reach and half an inch of standover, and both are honestly labeled. The useful work happens before you walk in: knowing your inseam, knowing roughly what saddle height that implies, and knowing which of the three fit dimensions you can adjust later and which one you are stuck with. That preparation turns a test ride from a guess into a check.

The three measurements that decide the outcome

Standover is the vertical clearance between the top tube and you, straddling the bike flat-footed, and it is the crudest of the three, though a shortage of it is genuinely unpleasant at every stoplight. Saddle height is set by your leg, not the frame, and any frame in the plausible range can be adjusted to it as long as the seatpost has travel left. Reach, the horizontal distance from saddle to handlebar, is the one that quietly ruins bikes, because a frame too long in the top tube cannot be shortened enough to matter. Check those three separately. The label blends them into one letter and loses the detail.

Measure your inseam at home against a wall, book pressed up firmly, shoes off, and write the number down in centimeters because that is how most fit charts are printed. Multiply it by roughly 0.88 and you have a starting saddle height, measured from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the saddle, which is close enough to begin from and easy to refine over a week of riding. Bring that number with you. A shop that sets the saddle to it before you ride is doing the job properly, and one that does not is worth a question.

Why two mediums fit differently

Manufacturers size frames by seat tube length, or by their own alphabet, or by a rider height range they invented, and none of those tells you the top tube length. Two mediums with identical seat tubes can carry effective top tubes an inch apart, and once you add a stem that is 90mm on one and 110mm on the other, the difference in how far you are stretched is substantial. The number that cuts through this is stack and reach, published as two figures in the geometry table, describing where the head tube sits relative to the bottom bracket. Find those numbers for anything you are considering. They compare across brands in a way that letters never will.

What ten minutes in a parking lot can tell you

A short, slow ride on flat pavement will reveal standover, gross reach problems, whether the bars are wildly too low, and whether the bike feels twitchy or stable at walking speed. It will not reveal hand numbness, saddle discomfort, a knee that complains after four miles, or the neck ache that shows up on a headwind ride at mile ten. Those are the failures that make a bike sit in the garage. So use the parking lot for the coarse screening, deliberately: stand over it, ride it no-handed for a moment if you can, sit up and look behind you, brake hard once. Then ask about the shop's fit adjustment period, because most decent shops offer one.

Fixable near misses, and the ones that are not

A stem swap of 10 or 20mm, which is a small parts charge and fifteen minutes of labor, changes reach meaningfully and is the standard remedy for a bike that is nearly right. Rotating the handlebar a few degrees changes wrist angle and effective reach slightly, costs nothing, and fixes more hand complaints than people expect. Saddle fore-aft exists to position your knee over the pedal, not to correct reach, and using it that way trades one problem for another. What no adjustment fixes: a frame whose standover leaves you no clearance, a seatpost already at its minimum insertion line, or a top tube so long that the shortest sensible stem still leaves you reaching. Those are size problems, and the answer is a different frame.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission oversees the safety requirements bicycles sold in the United States are built to, which covers braking, reflectors and assembly, and stops well short of whether a given frame suits your torso. That part is yours to verify. Arrive with an inseam measurement, a saddle height, and the stack and reach figures for two or three candidates, and the conversation at the shop becomes a short one about stem length rather than a long one about how a bike feels.

Inseam measured at a wall

Stand shoeless with a hardcover book pressed firmly up against your crotch and mark the wall at its top edge. That number, in centimeters, is the input for nearly every fit chart you will meet.

The 0.88 starting point

Multiplying inseam by about 0.88 gives a workable saddle height measured from the bottom bracket center to the top of the saddle. Treat it as a place to begin, then adjust a few millimeters at a time over a week of riding.
